New glasses… after seven years…

new-glasses.jpgI can’t wear contacts. My eyes are too dry or something. Good thing I don’t mind wearing glasses.

I had an eye exam for the first time in years – like seven, actually – and it turns out my eyes have more than doubled in suckiness. So, I took the opportunity to update my frames also.

I made the mistake of first looking for frames I would like on the Country Club Plaza at the Optical Shop of Aspen. I should have remembered the simple equation Plaza + Aspen = Unaffordable, but I didn’t. Thank the Lord for the interweb.

Enter modernglasses.com, while they won’t ever be nominated for a SXSW Web Award, they do offer a great service: boutique level and designer eye frames at great prices. I saved well over $300 on a pair of frames and lenses (with Crizal, no less).

Whilst searching for a new frame my friend !jon asked if I was getting “a pair of glasses like all the ska-kids wear?” Well, I guess so, I told him. “Oh man… those are so lame! They look like your trying to hard to be cool!” Hard to hear your trying to hard to look cool from this guy!

Trying to hard to look cool? Really? Do I come across that way? I always feel like I’m trying to hard to suppress my coolness. Seriously, I have to dial it way down all the time.

I wonder if my friend !jon feels this guy is trying to hard to be cool?

I think they look cool. And, thanks for the link. But, I have the most difficult time finding glasses that I like even when I get to try them on… How did you know that they would fit right, be comfortable, etc.?

By the way, I’m going to get my eyes checked tonight!

Thanks Tim! I wasn’t very clear about how I knew they would fit and all, huh?

I did it old skool. First, I went to a few shops and tried on some frames. Just so happened that the pair I liked most were at Optical Shop of A$pen. Then I just Googled the brand and frame name for a place to buy them online. Make sense?

There are some really great places online that sell off-brand or generic frames for really great prices ($80 w/ lenses). I’m just vain and felt the need to buy a good sturdy pair.

    Good luck!

I ended up buying a pair from the place I got my eyes checked — turns out my insurance is pretty dang good in this case… And, I actually found a pair I liked.

As a shout-out, I always have to tout EyeCare Optical (over by Wolf Camera in Westport). Doug knows many JWers and has help us with glasses for years now — his glasses selection rocks (but mostly expensive).

Unfortunately, since my insurance changed, I can’t go to him anymore. This time I went to Littlefield Eye Associates at 7400 Wornall. They were pretty good too, but their glasses selection isn’t the greatest (even though I found the pair I bought).
